ADVENT 16: Are you making excuses?

This is Day 16 of the Advent Calendar for 2015. Open more doors here >>

If it’s important to you, you will find a way. If not, you’ll find an excuse” Ryan Blair

Another quote I’ve heard that goes alongside this one is that if you want something doing, ask a busy person. What’s on your to-do list that seems impossible to fit in? How important is it to you? If it really matters to you, somehow you’ll find a way. I know if I’m feeling really passionate about something I’ll manage to do it. Somehow. I might sacrifice sleep, or work like the clappers to allow me to do whatever it is, but if something matters to me enough there’s nothing standing in my way. What can you give up or change to enable you to do the things you really want to do?

Is there anything on your list that you’ve been putting off? Why is that?

Recently I attended a day all about blogging and the final section was on video. I used to do video and will again next year as it was really worth doing. It was suggested to take small steps to build up confidence and an audience through doing videos on Twitter or Instagram, moving on to online meetings with the ultimate goal being to do Periscope and YouTube videos. People in the room felt nervous about doing videos – the idea of being on camera and messing up – especially if it’s live. However, it’s been proven that it’s worth doing videos in your business – here’s a handy link to show you why.

My point not being that you should make videos (although if you’re not, maybe you should think about it?) but maybe you have something on your list of things to do that you are putting off because you don’t want to do it? You’re nervous, you’re worried about it for some reason, – but you KNOW that doing it will be worth it. You’re making excuses. It’s hard, but you’ve got to stop making excuses and make it happen.

As with the video example, maybe you need to think of ways to make your “thing” less scary. Start with smaller steps and build up, develop a plan and then follow it. The longer you put it off, the bigger it’s going to seem and if it’s worth doing then you’re not going to benefit from it if you don’t make it happen.

I’d recomend reading this book to help you overcome your excuses. Paul is an action taker who has overcome various problems and developed a no excuses attitude to help him get to where he is today. It’s worth reading, full of practical ideas.

Maybe you need to just get it over with, that thing you’re putting off. Just do it so it’s done. No more excuses, seize the day and get it out of the way.
